Shanghai Huashan Hospital officially launched its international patient service upgrade plan this week, adding a multilingual medical coordination team and enabling direct billing with international insurers. The first batch of partner insurance companies includes over 30 providers such as Allianz, AIA, and Cigna & CMB, covering outpatient, inpatient, and surgical scenarios. This service has been officially launched at the China Concierge (Shanghai) International Medical Service Center.

The newly established International Patient Service Center is located on the third floor of Huashan Hospital's outpatient building, equipped with coordinators fluent in five languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic, providing full-process support from appointment scheduling, medical accompaniment, medical record translation, to post-discharge follow-up. Meanwhile, the hospital's information system has been integrated with the direct billing platform, allowing foreign patients to settle bills without cash and directly proceed with insurance claims.

Background and Significance

As a National Center for Neurological Diseases, Huashan Hospital receives over 12,000 foreign patients annually, with neurosurgery, dermatology, and infectious diseases being the most popular departments. Previously, foreign patients often faced treatment delays due to language barriers and cumbersome payment processes. This upgrade not only represents a concrete practice aligned with international JCI standards but also responds to Shanghai's policy direction of building an Asian medical center city. The multilingual team and direct billing system are expected to reduce patient waiting time by approximately 40%, improving diagnostic and treatment efficiency.

Significance for International Patients

For expatriates in China and individuals with overseas medical needs, this initiative means lower communication costs and a smoother payment experience. For example, brain tumor patients in neurosurgery can have high-end examinations (such as PET-MRI) and surgical costs covered through the direct billing platform without needing to pay upfront. Additionally, international patients can use the cost estimator tool to plan their budgets in advance and learn about departmental specialties through the medical services page. Telemedicine consultation services are also now available, covering subspecialties such as complex neurological disorders and liver transplantation, facilitating initial screening for overseas patients.
