iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cell) derived cell therapy for macular degeneration has entered the clinical stage, bringing new treatment possibilities for patients with retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. The therapy uses the patient's own cells reprogrammed to reduce immune rejection and avoid embryonic ethical controversies.

Treatment principle

The therapy reprograms the patient's own adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells, then differentiates them into retinal pigment epithelial cells, precisely attaching cell sheets to the subretinal space through minimally invasive surgery, replacing damaged cells and protecting photoreceptors.

Technical highlights

Autologous sourcing reduces immune rejection risk while avoiding ethical issues related to embryonic stem cells. The surgery is minimally invasive with less trauma and faster recovery.

Suitable population

Mainly for patients with degenerative retinal diseases such as dry macular degeneration. Suitable candidates can first complete fundus and visual function evaluation at partner hospitals to clarify staging and indications.
