Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center (上海市质子重离子医院) is China's first and most experienced particle therapy center, equipped with Siemens particle therapy systems and offering both proton and carbon ion therapy.

Indications

Pancreatic cancer: 343 treated cases, 64.1% 2-year survival for locally advanced disease (landmark result).

Chordoma/chondrosarcoma of skull base and spine — Carbon ion is superior due to high RBE.

Hepatocellular carcinoma — Especially central tumors unsuitable for SBRT.

Pediatric cancers — Proton reduces dose to developing tissue, lowering secondary cancer risk.

Recurrent cancers after prior radiotherapy — Particle re-irradiation with lower toxicity.

Prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, sarcomas.

Multidisciplinary Evaluation

Not all patients are suitable. SPHIC requires a multidisciplinary evaluation including imaging review, pathology confirmation, and assessment of prior treatment. Since 2025, Prof. Yu Xianjun (虞先濬, FUSCC pancreatic surgery leader) also serves as SPHIC director, strengthening pancreatic cancer coordination.
