Shanghai Jiao Tong University affiliated general teaching hospital, founded 1904, 1,766 authorized beds. In 1963 Prof. Chen Zhongwei performed the world's first successful replantation of a severed limb here, making the hospital the cradle of limb replantation in China; the 1978 hand reconstruction technique ("Chinese Hand") won the National Invention Award First Class. It is also the birthplace of ultrasound diagnostics in China. Six national key clinical specialties; orthopedics and endocrinology rank in the national top 5. A Lingang campus is also in operation.
